Friends

Em wants to know about my closest friends and what they mean to me.

Here is all of them, except one, in this picture:

They were all in my wedding, except Georgette because she does not do the dress or the heel thing.  I almost asked her for the entertainment factor of watching her in heels, but instead I had her do something else for me that day that was also special.

So from left to right, here we go:

Amie:  I met Amie when I was five years old.  That means we have been friends for 26 years and that numbers scares the living grey hair off my head.  ANYWAY,  we started out in kindergarten together and continued to go to school together for 10 years.  We went to a VERY small school and Amie, for some reason, ended up being the one girl who everyone made fun of all the time.  I’m not sure why it was her or if there is ever any good explanation for that, but the fact was, it was her.  Some people think it started when she invited us all to her 6th (I think) birthday party and told us Michael Jackson was the entertainment.  Of course, he wasn’t and everyone thought she was a big liar and it just prompted more fun poking.  But honestly, now when I think about it, these people (the boys, at least) should be praising her because after what we know now about MJ, maybe it was a GOOD thing he wasn’t there!  ANYWAY, I liked Amie.  And I know that sometimes I did participate in making fun of her but I always felt really bad about it and eventually just stopped and started being her friend.  I actually got in trouble once for calling the girls on the playground “bitches” for being mean to her.  Not that I’m trying to say I was perfect, but I laugh that I called them bitches.  Hehehe.  I moved away after our freshman year and we have stayed in touch since.  And every time I see her it’s like we were never apart.  And for the times I did make fun of her?  Don’t worry she got me back by hitting me in the head with a big stick.  She says it was an ACCIDENT, but when you keep swinging a stick around my head, it’s BOUND to happen.

Amy:  Or better known as Amelia.  That’s what I nicknamed her and that’s what I call her.  I have been friends with Amelia since 2002.  We met when she came to work in the same building with me at my old place of employment.  We hit if off immediately and started hanging out outside of work.  We founded a “sorority” with another one of our coworkers and also heisted a fishnapping.  In our defense, it was for charity.  I don’t recommend involving Amelia in any type of heist in the future as she was ready to shout out, “IT WAS US!!!  WE DID IT!!” at any given moment during any meeting we were a part of, even if those meeting members had no clue what was going on.  Yeah, not a good heister.  BUT!  She is a fun person to go on vacation with!  In 2003 (gosh, I think), we went to San Francisco together to visit a friend of mine.  We even made our way up to Napa Valley for a wine tour and actually we were just discussing this Thursday night because I took her to a nearby gourmet market and we were admiring the mustard.  And we both cracked up because when we arrived at our third winery in Napa, we were already almost drunk.  Lunch was still 2 wineries away, I believe.  Well, this winery had a little pretzel/mustard thing going on to clean your pallet between tastings, but ah, we treated it more like a meal and that did not go unnoticed by our fellow travelers.  CLASSY!  Luckily our wine mates were 2 young guys, our age, and a family….we called them The Wongs.  We really thought their name was The Wongs.  Until the end.  When they told us they were The Chows.  Oops.

Michelle:  Or also known as MS, Shelly Belly, Shell.  I met Michelle in the summer of 1992.  We were new on the block and Michelle and her family brought us HOMEMADE chocolate chip cookies.  My fave, btw.  She had cute blonde hair and braces.  We both had braces actually.  A few days later she stopped over and invited me to the mall with her girlfriends.  We walked around, stopping at Contempo and then Olga’s for fries.  Michelle bought the Baby Got Back single and we jammed it out in the Astro van with Jack (her dad) driving on the way back home.  I might be mixing 2 different initial mall visits in that memory but it did happen.  I soon was part of that girl group and it was lockers together and slumber parties galore for the remainder of our high school days.  I wonder if Michelle had not invited me to the mall that day, how would I have done that first year?  I was so scared.  I moved from a school with 15 kids per class to a school with 400 per class.  After high school, our girl group of 6 sort of split, then split again and now 3 of us (Jen included, her story below) our VERY close and I’m not sure how close the other 3 are, but they are friends.  We do sometimes get together for girls night out with those other 3 though.  Like I said, we are still very close and make it a priority to see each other often and get annoyed if too much time passes (like a week or 2) and we go camping together at least once a summer.

Sheila:  Or otherwise known as Cousin.  Sheila is my twin cousin.  And we say that because our Moms are twins.  Fraternal.  There is this picture of my mom and aunt when they are…..maybe 8 months old with their backs to each other facing the camera.  Recently my Uncle brought me a picture of me and Sheila and said, “Who does that remind you of?”  It’s hysterical because it could be the same picture only I’m my mom and she’s hers.  ANYWAY, obviously I have known Sheila since she was born in 1978.  We became really close, and more like girlfriends in 2003, I think.  Our grandfather was 100% Polish and so we pretty much grew up around the accordion.  We have attended several Polish festivals together and we love to dance the night away.  She actually goes almost every weekend.  We love it though.  We love the beer too.  Sheila is also like the one person who I SWEAR if I’m with her, I will be waking up with a sore stomach from laughing so hard the next day.  We laugh till tears come almost the entire time we are together.  And she’s my blood, can’t deny that!  I would tell you my funniest memory of Sheila but it seems that when we spend nights laughing ourselves half dead that when we try to tell the story to other people, they do not find it as funny as we do.  I’m not sure why that is.

Stay tuned for Jennifer and Georgette………..
