Conversations This Week

Sunday.  We were putting the crib together.  And when I say we, I mean Rob was putting it together as myself and Star laid on the floor.  Star was my headrest.  I did hand him a few things though.

Rob:  I don’t know Sweetlips, I think I’m getting nervous.

Me:  Nervous?  For the baby?

Rob:  Yeah, I’m just not sure what kind of dad I’m going to be.

Me:  Well, what kind of dad do you want to be?

Rob:  You know, like the dead beat kind who is never around, what do you think I meant?

I knew what he meant.  And my response was meant to be rhetorical!  He knew that though, he thinks he is funny.

Wednesday.  In the kitchen.  Making dinner.

Rob:  I hope our son will like us and feel comfortable talking to us.

Me:  Of course he’ll like us, who wouldn’t?

Rob:  I mean, when he’s older and needs advice, I hope he’ll ask me for it.  I don’t want him to be afraid to talk to us.

Me:  Ah, well, that’s why it’s our job to make him feel safe and supported, so he knows he can.  We just have to make sure we keep the communication door open.

Rob:  Yeah..but…

Me:  And we (really you) have to remember that just because he asks for your advice doesn’t mean he’s going to follow it.

Rob:  See?  That’s what I mean…

Me:  I know that’s what you meant.  I DO know you.  He’s going to make mistakes Rob, and we have to let him learn by those just like we had to.

Rob:  But that won’t happen if he listens to me.

Me:  I know Honey.

Last night.  Phone conversation.  Rob’s in Ann Arbor.

Rob:  Hey Sweetlips, I was reading your pregnancy book you left in the bathroom.

Yeah, I totally read in the bathroom, so what?

Me:  Did you learn anything?

Rob:  Yeah, I learned that this week you might be feeling not so pretty and beautiful so the “Dad Tip” was that I should take you out for dinner and a movie.

Me:  REALLY?

Rob:  Yeah, so tomorrow night do you want to go out to a dinner and a movie with me?

Hehehe.  YES
