Hospital Trip

I know I haven’t mentioned exactly what Gavin’s surgery was all about.  It wasn’t life threatening or anything but I felt bad writing about it since it’s…um…personal to him.  He was born with a little issue when it came to his private parts, nothing crazy or deformed, just something that needed to be fixed but it required surgery.  That also meant that they did not circumcise him after birth so he got it all fixed yesterday.  You’re welcome.  And sorry future Gavin!  No, I will probably come back and delete this part in a few weeks.  Anyway, I was just worried because he had to go under anesthesia and they did a spinal block which made me nervous.  Everything went well except that he couldn’t eat anything after midnight except clear fluids (no issue) but then nothing at all after 4:30 am (still no issue) and his surgery was scheduled for 8:30.  This was okay because he normally wakes up around 8:00 and doesn’t always drink a bottle right away so I wasn’t worried, HOWEVER, they did not come get him until almost 9:30 and he was PISSED.  He was so hungry and let me just tell you how I felt like the worst momma EVER for just trying to appease him while he’s all, I’m STARVING, MOTHER.  I’m pretty sure he actually said that at one point.

After surgery I was able to go in right away and hold him while he was in the PACU.  The nurse told me they would try glucose water and apple juice to start and then if that went well, he could have a bottle.  But don’t expect him to have too much of an appetite today.  HAHAHAHA, good one, nurse.

Rob said his biggest frustration with yesterday is how the nurses act like we don’t know our baby.  When he moved from PACU to recovery I put him back in the crib so they could transport him because he still had an IV attached.  When we got to the recovery room, I reached down to pick him back up and the nurse said, “We don’t want to disturb him now, let him rest so he doesn’t wake up fussy.”

What, BITCH?  Gavin never wakes up fussy.  I would know that.  Anyway, he finally did wake up and I gave him the glucose water which he sucked down like he’d never eaten before.  I could tell he wanted more so the nurse left to get the apple juice.  When she came back in she lean towards him and Gavin lunged towards her and ripped that apple juice right out of her hands. And when we got home he proceeded to down five bottles before he went to the sleep for the night.  He also ate sweet potatoes.  No appetite, my ass.

I do have to say that the surgery part was easy.  It was last night when I could tell the block was wearing off and he was getting fussy that killed me.  Ouch, sweet boy!

He’s doing really well though, he’s crawling around and playing and I can tell today he’s not in as much pain.

I got in a lot of cuddle time yesterday.  I’m so grateful for that.  I rarely get to hold Gavin when he’s sleeping because he prefers to sleep on his stomach so when he’s fussy and ready for bed, it means he wants in his bed.  Any other time of the day he’s on the go and crawling everywhere so I was happy to hold him as much as I could yesterday.

And I’m glad it’s over.

This was supposed to be shorter and I was going to talk about photography too but I’ve clearly made this into one whole post.  So I will be done.

But how cute is Gavin?  This was the “buggy” (the nurse called it) that we circled the halls with to keep him occupied before surgery.  He has on maroon knee-high hospital socks.  I wish I would’ve brought my real camera.

  1. I kind of thought it might be something along these lines. Glad everything went smoothly and he’s feeling ok! That’s hilarious that he drank/ate so much. Def means he feels pretty good.

I love seeing pics of him. He’s so adorable!….. both your boys are. 🙂
